song with jon ... - September 20, 2012

My brother Jon and I wrote a song today. This is the first one we've ever written together. Jon had all the words and the rough melody completed by the time I woke up this morning. I've been banging out an arrangement throughout the day. He's a natural. I always figured he would be.

pirate church .. - September 20, 2012

There's a very old Catholic church here in Villefranche that I visit daily. It's called Monastery Église Saint-Michel. I call it the pirate church because it has this great seafaring pirate vibe to it. It's dark and spooky inside with huge paintings of different saints in peculiar states of ecstasy and life size wood carvings that were painstakingly created by galley slaves several hundred years ago.

Ragtime Millionaire - September 18, 2012

Wow, I just had the best Vietnamese food I've ever eaten. The restaurant, Le Mekong, is a famous hole in the wall in a back alley of Villefranche. I try not to blog about food but that was unbelievable. I spent yesterday roaming the streets of Monte Carlo and today in Nice. I'm a poor bluesman in the French Riviera.
I feel like the guy in the old song called "Ragtime Millionaire".

Beatle sighting .. - September 18, 2012

Last night in Monaco I met Ringo Starr. I told him a few stories and got a few laughs out of him.
it was pretty surreal. We love the Beatles.

Riviera - September 15, 2012

I flew in to Nice, France today. Spectacular. Going to grab a bite to eat down at the harbor in Villefranche.

Fest Review - September 10, 2012

Gospelfest Heidelberg was a real success. We had beautiful Northern California weather and the people were reveling in it. The sound man really knew his job so the worship team sounded great and they were having a good day musically. I was only scheduled to play two or three songs but as usual Big Joe Lewis sprung something new on me. Love that man. Joe wanted me to go onstage and stay up there for a good bit. He also asked if I'd start with some instrumental pieces. I just smiled and told him no problem. It turned out to be a good mixed show and by the end of the set all the street people were feeling it and behind me. Some of the songs I did were "John the Revelator", "Jesus Gonna Make Up My Dying Bed" and I ended with a twelve minute version of "Double Edged Sword". It was pretty awesome and I still feel blessed by it.

Gospelfest ... - September 3, 2012

I posted the video I mentioned on my homepage ...

I'll be playing at the Heidelberg Gospelfest on Saturday, September 8th.
I'm not certain of the time but I know it will be in the afternoon.

friday night ... - August 31, 2012

I ain't heard diddly from TRI studios but I'm hoping to. I want to go to California. :)
I recorded a new instrumental during the week and recorded some video footage yesterday.
I'll upload the video on youtube now and will post the link.

monday monday ... - August 27, 2012

A stellar Monday in Heidelberg. Sun is out, not too hot, just beautiful. I played at the homeless shelter yesterday afternoon. I always get blessed when I do that and the people seem to enjoy it too.

TRI Studios - August 23, 2012

Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead has a multimedia studio in San Rafael, California called TRI Studios and it is one beautiful facility. They're hosting a contest for musicians who are free to submit one to three songs. After a vote that the public is invited to join, ten artists will be picked and allowed to record one song multi-track along with a video shoot of the session. This sounds like a blast so I submitted my three picks. I hope I win. Then I'd have a good excuse to visit Marin County !
You can check out TRI studios at:

five banger ... - August 20, 2012

We're through the worst of a heat wave here in Heidelberg. Yesterday was 100 degrees and today was another 5 shower day.
I practice the guitar on days like this in the huge cathedral down the street. I almost had a heart attack today when a homeless man who was sleeping popped up from one of the pews in front of me. It was pretty funny. He said he liked the music.

birthday boy ... - August 13, 2012

We're enjoying beautiful summer weather here in Heidelberg. I had a great birthday yesterday. I turned 58. If I knew I was going to live this long I would have taken better care of myself. All in all though, I'm not in too bad of shape. I still haven't regained my full singing range which is very frustrating but the doctor says I'm on the mend. I've been writing and recording in the meantime. Dog days of August. I'm digging it.

itunes ... - August 4, 2012

The doctor says i'll survive and live to sing another day. I just have to rest up for a bit. Hey, my new CD is finally out on itunes and all the other download stores !
I hope you'll check it out and tell your friends. Here's a few links.

hexenschuss ... - July 28, 2012

I made it through the heat wave and the gig last night with the help of the Twins. They always sound great. They played some songs as a duo and then we played as a trio. They saved my butt because my voice was only hitting around 50%. Today I reached down to grab something from the cabinet under the sink and got the lightning bolt in the lower back. Not the super bad one but it hurts. In Germany we call it the "hexenschuss" or the "witches shot", in English. It's been a bit of a rough week. I have another gig tomorrow but luckily for me the Twins will be around to help out.

hot one ... - July 26, 2012

That was a three shower day. Mid nineties and no air conditioing. Whew.

summer cold ... - July 25, 2012

We're enjoying some beautiful summer weather presently in Heidelberg. It's a little hot for the locals but they should try Philadelphia. I have two private shows I have to play this weekend. Unfortunately, I caught a summer cold the other day and seem to have lost a portion of my singing voice. It goes like this re mi fa so la ti quack.. quack...
That doesn't happen often and it's not a pleasant feeling when you know you have to suit up in the near future but I'm taking all the necessary measures and counting on my body to heal by Friday. Quack.

sunday ... - July 22, 2012

C'mon sunshine. You can do it. Sunday here in Central Europe. Going to get a fresh baguette, have a little chow and then spend some hours playing and praisin'. I'll probably head back over to that chapel I made the recent video in. I'm working on a rocking version of "John the Revelator" at the moment. I have my feelers out in America for opportunities to tour in the late fall and I'm looking forward to playing with Steve, Jorma and Jack again. Steve is out on a west coast run and I hear they're tearing it up. I'll meet tomorrow with Gigu Neutsch, a great local musician and we'll start rehearsing as a duo to play some shows. Also I got an offer to play with the legendary George Hoffmann and his blues band in Miltenberg. I love the Odenwald !!

LaRosa Amps ... - July 20, 2012

Special thanks to Jamie Thompson for the use of one of his hand-built LaRosa guitar amps that I used on the Hot Tuna dates with Steve Kimock. If you like the vintage Fender Deluxe sound, check it out !

donnerstag .. - July 19, 2012

I'm sittin' here in my winter coat and it's 90 degrees in Philly. Crazy. Anyway, it's still a good day. I'm tanked up and grateful. I'll go shoot a video after lunch and finish the paperwork to have the new CD released when I'm through with that.
I have a few private concerts I have to give next week. That'll help pay the bills. Yeah right, I got to pay those bills !

upload ... - July 17, 2012

Today I'm doing the necessary legal legwork to upload my new record on cd baby, Itunes etc...
I'm also working on a few new tunes for the next one. Feeling grateful.

summer ... - July 16, 2012

I seem to remember a season called summer when it wasn't consistently above a humid 90 degrees or raining and cold the whole time. Wonder what happened to that ? I'm enjoying practicing some old time country blues today.

jetlag .. - July 13, 2012

Crossing those time zones doesn't get any easier but I'm in good shape today. I slept through a few alarm clocks but I'm now ready to hit the streets of Heidelberg. The weather here is unusually cool, especially after coming out of the heat wave in Philadelphia, so once again I'll be the obvious American walking around in short pants.

germany bound .. - July 11, 2012

It's been a great trip. Heading to the airport in a few hours. Frankfurt bound !

independence day - July 4, 2012

I'm enjoying the 4th of July holiday with my good friend Randy Thompson at his home in Yardley, Pennsylvania. It's very hot and humid outside but that's nothing new for us Levittown boys. We grew up in this. Randy just went down to the Delaware River to take his blonde lab, Mia, swimming. Then he's going to give her a bath and let her come inside and hang out with us in the air conditioned house. hehe. We're one big happy family and the guitars are out of their cases.
Here's a little 4th of July song for you all:
